Since 2017, VictimFocus has confidentially supported and advised on public relations, comms, campaigns and media projects such as TV programmes, films, documentaries and audio-visual resources. We have worked on productions for BBC, Sky, Netflix, ITV, MTV, Channel 4 and more.

Due to our expertise in domestic and sexual violence, we have been commissioned to support production teams to create intelligent and innovative TV, whilst always protecting participants or cast members. This has often meant guiding production companies towards more trauma-informed and ethical techniques and designs, and away from approaches that could harm people involved, or those watching at home.

For those who are looking for research and evidence-base underpinning their pitches and packages to commissioners, we have worked with production companies for several years now, to improve their understanding of psychological theory and evidence when designing a concept for TV. In some cases, this has meant significant primary research with hundreds of people, while for others, it has been consultancy and presentations which explain key concepts, theories and evidence for particular social issues such as spiking, consent, sexual abuse, pregnancy from rape, and misogyny.

Applying our expertise in psychology, violence against women and girls, trauma, misogyny and criminal justice, we have supported producers and casting professionals to make ethical and effective decisions when creating programmes about sensitive topics.

In 2018 and 2019, we undertook and presented research for production companies working with major TV channels and streaming services.

Our research demonstrated the need for additional safety considerations, anonymity, the protection of identities, and additional safeguarding approaches that had not been implemented. Further, we advised on programme design which led to significant changes in structure and scene that may have risked the safety of victims of abuse and violence. Since 2020, we have engaged with press and media on an almost weekly basis, either given press comment, writing articles, advising producers and journalists, providing evidence and expert insight.

In 2022, we extended our service to include professional comms teams for government, local authorities, police forces and campaigning organisations.

For many comms teams, writing content or developing public campaigns about violence, abuse and trauma can be difficult and complex territory. We have developed training, resources and consultancy to support comms teams to improve their knowledge and skill.

Learn about our co-production panels and victim consultation

Why do we include victim panels?

At VictimFocus, we champion the voices and experiences of children and adults who have been subjected to abuse, trauma and violence.

As more services move towards the value of co-production, and exploring the experiences of service users, clients, victims and witnesses, we have been supporting organisations to set up panels and consultation in the most effective way possible.

VictimFocus consults on, designs, delivers, and manages co-production panels in domestic and sexual violence. From concept through to delivery and evaluation, our team can help you to set up and deliver an ethical, effective and supportive trauma-informed co-production panel with children or adults.

  • Our work developing the domestic abuse survivor panel

In 2020, we were commissioned by a local authority to design, develop and manage a domestic abuse survivor co-production panel which would become a critical friend to the local authority in their commissioning and funding of domestic abuse services. A three year project, we began by recruiting men and women who had been subjected to domestic abuse in the local authority area, who would like to become a panel member.

VictimFocus provided a dedicated panel manager, all training and resources, support, advice, materials and mentoring to the panel as they developed as a team. Over time, the panel grew in confidence, and assisted the local authority in evaluating bids for local domestic abuse services.

  • Our work with women and girls subjected to male violence

In 2021, we were contacted by a sexual violence organisation who needed a new set of resources for women and girls who had been subjected to domestic abuse and sexual violence. Having recently secured funding to develop their service, they asked us to consult with women and girls, and their professionals, to co-develop a new intervention for women and girls who were accessing therapeutic support.

Our teams worked with groups of women and girls throughout this two-year project to develop a large suite of materials, interventions, exercises, and resources that could be undertaken as a step-by-step programme. We completed this project by training the service professionals how to deliver our work, and by evaluating the programme with women and girls to understand the impact of the new intervention.
